================================================================= CENSUS 2000 DRESS REHEARSAL GEOGRAPHIC PRODUCTS CD-ROM readme.txt ================================================================= SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Operating System Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 3.51 or later CPU Pentium(R) 90MHz or higher Video Adapter VGA 640x480 or higher System RAM 24MB for Windows 95, 32MB for Windows NT Free Disk Space 10MB Printer Large format plotter supporting HP/GL and E-Size pages (36 x 33 inches) SOFTWARE INSTALLATION Included with the Geographic Products CD-ROM is GeoDressRehearsal, the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal Geographic Products software for viewing and printing the maps and geographic files contained on this CD. To install GeoDressRehearsal: 1. Click on the "Install" button on the opening screen which appears when you place the CD in the drive. Then click on "Software". 2. Follow the instructions which appear on your screen. Depending on which files are already on your computer, you may be asked to restart Windows and click on the "Install". . ."Software" buttons again to complete installation. We are not able to test the installation software on every possible network configuration, so there may be other network-related problems of which we are not aware. We cannot provide support for network installations. You must also have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system to be able to view the .pdf map files. The files are designed to work best with Acrobat Reader Version 4.0. If Acrobat Reader 4.0 is not already on your system you may install it from the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal Geographic Products Disk: 1. Click on the "Install" button on the opening screen, then click "Acrobat Reader". 2. Follow the instructions which appear. SOFTWARE OPERATION To run GeoDressRehearsal: 1. Click on the "Launch" button on the opening screen. or 1. Click on Start 2. Click on Programs 3. Click on Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal Geographic Products 4. Click on GeoDressRehearsal The first time you run GeoDressRehearsal you will be asked to enter the letter of your CD-ROM drive. This will tell GeoDressRehearsal where on your system to look for the maps and other files. Please enter the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by a colon and backslash. For instance, if the letter of your CD-ROM drive is E, enter E:\ GeoDressRehearsal presents four tabs to choose from: At the first tab, Product Information, find a description of the products included on the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal Geographic Products CD-ROM. The second tab, View Maps, allows you to look at the map files in .pdf format through Adobe Acrobat Reader. Browse through the folders and map files to find the map type and location you want to see. Then click on the map file to select it, and click on the View Map button to start Acrobat Reader. At the third tab, Print Maps, you can print maps to your large format plotter. Zipped .hp files are located in the \Maps\HP\Block and \Maps\HP\Tract directories. Use your own unzipping software to unzip the .hp file you want to print and place it in the directory of your choice. Then from the third tab on the GeoDressRehearsal software, click on "Open Map File" to open the .hp file you want to print and click on "Print Map" to print it. The usual Windows Print dialog box will appear, allowing you to choose the plotter and number of copies. The fourth tab, Geographic Files, provides access to metadata for both map types and information and metadata for the Corner Point files. Just click on the More. . . button or one of the metadata buttons. CD CONTENTS The root directory contains files necessary to automatically launch the CD and install the necessary software. The Adobe folder contains rs40eng.exe, a program which will install the Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 software, which must be on your system to view the maps on screen. The Demo folder contains the Demo Shield software, which creates the opening screen. The Corner_P folder contains corner point files which have bounding coordinates for each map sheet. These files can be read by most word processing programs. For more details, go to the GeoDressRehearsal software, click on the Geographic Files tab, then click on the More. . . button beside Corner Point Files. The Maps folder contains the files necessary to install GeoDressRehearsal, the software for viewing and printing the maps on the CD. In sub-folders under the Maps folder are the Census Block maps and Census Tract Outline maps prepared to accompany Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal data products in .pdf format for viewing with Adobe Acrobat Reader and zipped .hp files for printing on a large format plotter. The PDF folder contains the .pdf files and the HP folder contains the zipped .hp files. Under the PDF and HP folders are sub-folders for both map types and for each of the Census 2000 Dress Rehearsal sites. FGDC COMPLIANT METADATA The following text files, located in the Maps folder, contain FGDC format metadata for the maps and geographic files: Blockmd.txt Cornerptmd.txt Tractmd.txt GEODRESSREHEARSAL.INI The first time the GeoDressRehearsal software is run, it creates the file C:\GeoDressRehearsal.ini. This file contains the letter of the drive where GeoDressRehearsal will look for the Maps folder containing the map and metadata files. GeoDressRehearsal.ini is a text file with the following format: CDROM=X:\ where X is the letter of the drive. Should the configuration of your system change so that your CD drive changes to another letter you will need to edit GeoDressRehearsal.ini to have the GeoDressRehearsal software function properly. Also, you may desire to copy the map files from the CD to your hard drive. If you do so, create a Maps folder on the hard drive, copy the files to this folder, and edit GeoDressRehearsal.ini to reflect the new location's hard drive. ADOBE ACROBAT READER 4.0 In some cases when using Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 the fill patterns on the screen may not match the fill patterns on the original map. PRINTING ON UNIX The .hp map files on this CD can be plotted on Unix systems using the lpr command. See your Unix documentation. MINOR MAP DISCREPANCIES Although every effort was made to make every map as accurate as possible, some maps may have minor discrepancies such as the omission of labels for small areas along the map border. Please use each map carefully.
