README.TXT March 11, 1997 This CD-ROM contains two types of data files. The Pyramid Intake Data File contains daily intakes of food servings from the major food groups in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Guide Pyramid and selected subgroups (30 food groups); these data are derived from the 1994 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII 1994) conducted by the USDA's Agricultural Research Service. The data will facilitate analyses of nationwide food intake data in terms of national dietary recommendations. The second file, Servings Data Base, is a reference data base of food servings per 100 grams for each food code reported in CSFII 1994. A user interface, the Statistical Export and Tabulation System (SETS), is provided on this CD-ROM to facilitate the use of the data files on a personal computer. Documentation for using the data files and the SETS user's manuals/tutorial are provided as part of the documentation menu once SETS is installed. To install SETS please follow the instructions on the jacket of the CD-ROM case. See sections II and III below, if you have trouble with the installation. Adobe (R) Acrobat (R) Reader software is included on this CD-ROM and can be used to view portable document form (pdf) files (Adobe and Acrobat are trademarks of Adobe Systems Incorporated). This README file contains the following sections: I. WHAT IS SETS? II. REQUIREMENTS FOR installation III. IF, AFTER TYPING "INSTALL," THE SETS SOFTWARE WILL NOT LOAD IV. WHAT IS SETS? ================ SETS, the Statistical Export and Tabulation System, provides a means of accessing data from nationwide surveys at the personal computer level using a CD-ROM. The SETS software enables users to manipulate the data according to their analytic needs and to examine individual data records. The SETS User Interface (UI) allows the user to browse survey documentation and files, build record subsets, create tables, and export data to other software systems for analysis. --1-- II. REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION ================================= Successful installation of the SETS software requires the following hardware configurations: 1. Fully IBM-compatible microcomputer 286 or higher with 540 kilobytes of memory. 2. SETS will only operate in a MS-DOS 3.1 or higher environment. 3. Microsoft CD-ROM extensions, version 2.0 or higher. 4. SETS will not work in Macintosh/Apple or Unix. However, SETS can run on Apple Systems using Soft Windows. 5. CD-ROM must remain in driver - DO NOT REMOVE. 6. SETS will not run on a network. Logoff before initiating SETS applications. III. IF, AFTER TYPING "INSTALL," THE SETS SOFTWARE WILL NOT LOAD ================================================================ 1. Check that the CD-ROM reader is working. 2. Check that Microsoft CD-ROM extensions, version 2 or higher, are installed. To verify, look for the MSCDEX statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This software package usually includes a CD-ROM reader, a board that is installed in the CPU of the computer, and cables to attach the reader to the computer. The MSCDEX statement may have to be moved to the beginning or end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 3. Verify that the computer is a 286 or higher level computer. 4. Do a "chkdsk" to confirm that there are at least 1.5 megabytes of free space on the hard drive. IV. DIRECTORIES AND DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE OUTSIDE THE SETS ENVIRONMENT ========================================================= Most users will want to use the CSFII 1994 Pyramid Servings Data Files within the SETS environment on this CD-ROM. The data files are also available in a separate directory for users who wish to use them outside of the SETS environment (see 1, below). Directories 1 through 7 listed below contain information on documents contained within each directory on this CD-ROM. In some cases the user is directed to the main body of the documentation (SETS Main Menu BROWSE | DOCUMENTATION) on this CD-ROM for detailed information. --2-- *********************************************************** * 1. Pyramid Intake Data File and the Servings Data * * Base:[CD-ROM drive]:\servdata * *********************************************************** This directory includes the following files: rt42.dat ------ (Pyramid Intake Data File). Aggregates of daily food intake from 30 food groups, with one record for each day for each sample person and a record containing daily averages for each person if 2 days of intakes were reported. servdb.dat ---- (Servings Data Base). Number of total servings of 30 food groups per 100 grams of food. Data for the grain, vegetable, fruit, and dairy food groups are in servings. Data for the meat and meat alternate food groups are in ounces of cooked lean meat equivalents. Fat from the Pyramid tip is in grams, added sugar is in teaspoons, and alcohol is in number of drinks. servdb.doc ---- (formats) rt42.doc ------ (formats) The data files with the extension .dat use ASCII uncompressed formats. The ASCII text documents (.doc) located within this directory provide the formats for each file. The same documents are located in the Main Menu option of SETS: BROWSE | DOCUMENTATION section 5, "Data File Characteristics and Formats" on this CD-ROM. The SAS Programs can be used on these files (see section 5.3, "Input Programs"). ************************************************************ * 2. Documentation Files [CD-ROM drive]\:pyra1994 * ************************************************************ All CSFII 1994 Pyramid Servings documentation files and the SETS software manuals/tutorial are located within this directory. Although these files are located in the SETS Main Menu BROWSE | DOCUMENTATION, the user can print or utilize all of the files without going through the SETS environment. The documentation files are in ASCII text format and have the naming convention dxxxxxxx.doc, where d is for document, xxxxxxx is the section number, and .doc is for documentation. For example, to select the "Table of Contents" in Section 1, the naming convention would be d1.doc. Section 3, "Overview" would be d3_1.doc. See the Table of Contents for other section numbers. There are 12 individual documentation files. The SETS software manuals/tutorial are in ASCII text format and have the naming convention "sets9_1. man" (Quick Reference Manual/Tutorial) and "sets9_2.man" (Complete Reference Manual). --3-- There are also pdf versions of the same manuals located in this directory "sets9_1.pdf" and "sets9_2.pdf." SETS Quick Reference Manual/Tutorial describes an example of how to use the Pyramid Servings data in the SETS environment. The Complete Reference Manual is intended for users needing more specific information on SETS. The SAS programs have the extension [filename].sas (see the introduction to these programs in section 5.3 (d5_3.doc) in the documentation menu of this CD-ROM). The SAS filenames correspond to specific record types: rt42.sas and servdb.sas. All other file extensions (such as .acf, .aux, .bcf, .cmp, .ccf, cmc, .idr, .idf, etc.) are related to the SETS software and will not be of use to the user. ******************************************************************** * 3. Food Coding Data Base for CSFII 1994:[CD-ROM drive]:\fcdb * ******************************************************************** The Food Coding Data Base was used to code food data collected in the CSFII 1994 and to determine serving weights used in preparing the Servings Data Base. For a description of the Food Coding Data Base see section 8.4, "Data Processing," under the Main Menu option BROWSE | DOCUMENTATION. All the data files with the extension .txt use ASCII delimited uncompressed formats. Fields are separated by the caret (^) symbol, and character fields are enclosed by tilde (~) marks. The ASCII text document (formats.doc) in the subdirectory FORMATS explains the relationships among the data files and provides the format for each file.
