1990 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING 1988 Dress Rehearsal Census of St. Louis City, East Central Missouri, and Eastern Washington ------ In preparation for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, the Census Bureau conducted the 1988 Dress Rehearsal Census of St. Louis City, East Central Missouri, and Eastern Washington as of March 20, 1988. The purpose of the 1988 Dress Rehearsal was to implement and refine 1990 census procedures. This CD-ROM contains three sets of products from the 1988 Dress Rehearsal. These include P.L. 94-171 data files, Summary Tape File 1A data files, and the TIGER/Line files for Boone County, Missouri. Its purpose is to acquaint users with the formats planned for 1990 census CD-ROM products. The corresponding 1990 census products will be released as three separate data series beginning with P.L. 94-171 and TIGER/Line during the first quarter of 1991, and Summary Tape File 1A later in 1991. The P.L. 94-171 and Summary Tape File 1A data and index files on the CD-ROM are compatible with dBASE III+ and dBASE IV (registered trademarks of Ashton-Tate). They may be used with the many available software packages which recognize this format. The 1990 Census TIGER/Line Files will have record formats which differ slightly from the 1988 Dress Rehearsal version. Documentation for the 1988 Dress Rehearsal version is included in the TIGER directory. ------ The P.L. 94-171 files contain counts of total persons, total housing units, all persons and persons 18 years and over by race, and all persons and persons 18 years and over by race and Hispanic origin. Many levels of geographic summary are provided, including (SUMLEV codes are shown in parentheses): States (040) counties (050) census tracts/block numbering areas (140) voting districts (700) minor civil divisions/census county divisions (710) places (720) census tracts/block numbering areas (730) block groups (740) blocks (750) minor civil divisions/census county divisions (060) places (160) ------ The Summary Tape File 1A (STF1A) files contain tabulations from the 100-percent data. Data are presented in 36 population tables and 55 housing tables. Many levels of geographic summary are provided, including: States (040) counties (050) minor civil divisions/census county divisions (060) places (070) census tracts/block numbering areas (080) block groups (091) county parts of places (155) places (160) census tracts/block numbering areas (140) block groups (150) The data tables in the 1988 Dress Rehearsal STF1A files are identical to those that will be in the 1990 census STF1A. Since the questionnaires are not identical, the 1988 Dress Rehearsal files contain some data which are not comparable. This mostly involves housing tables. ------ For complete documentation, contact: Customer Services BUREAU OF THE CENSUS Data User Services Division Washington, DC 20233 (301-763-4100) ------ File Naming Conventions For the CD-ROM (note: ss is either MO or WA) PL94DD.DBF P.L. 94-171 data table outlines PL94DD.NDX Unique index on TABLE_ID (table title index PL941Dss.DBF P.L. 94-171 data file PL941Dss.COU Unique index on CNTY (county code index) PL941Dss.PLA Index on SUMLEV+PLACECE (place code index) PL941Dss.TRA Index on SUMLEV+CNTY+TRACTBNA (tract code index) STF1DD.DBF STF1 data table outlines STF1DD.NDX Unique index on TABLE_ID (table title index) STF1A1ss.DBF STF1A geographic identifiers STF1A1ss.COU Unique index on CNTY (county code index) STF1A1ss.PLA Index on SUMLEV+PLACECE (place code index) STF1A1ss.TRA Index on SUMLEV+CNTY+TRACTBNA (tract code) The following 8 files each contain a geographic identifier field called ID_SEGMENT followed by up to 127 data items.
